Creeping Sage
creeping flat perennial that can spread to 10' across. Its flowers are blue-violet in May-June appearing in a 6"spike above gray-green leaves that lie on the ground 1" or so high. It is native to dry slopes in the coast ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills. It likes full sun, good to fair drainage. Cold tolerant to 0 deg or less. This plant is temperamental, at its best one plant will cover an area 10 by 15 feet, but the plant may die back to the crown in one day when conditions vary. We've had it in the ground here for years. It is native in our county on a wind swept ridge in serpentine and on red clay on north slopes. It rainfall range is 20-30". It has done ok on our sandy loam and will tolerate clays as long as it drains. A beautiful ground cover between manzanita with monkey flowers and monardella.
